Exactly what is optimal core + Pelvic functioning?

Picture

When the core and pelvic muscles are strong and working well, pelvic organs are held in place, you don't leak when you sneeze, intercourse is stimulating and pain free, your back does not hurt, and balance is not a concern. But when the inner core is weakened, particularly the pelvic floor (for example, after childbirth or with deconditioning that results from a sedentary lifestyle) the following problems can occur:
  • Back and/or pelvic pain
  • Difficulty with arousal and/or vaginal lubrication
  • Bladder, uterine, or rectal prolapse
  • Incontinence (47% of women between the ages of 20-49 have experienced)
  • Instability of the trunk and pelvis, contributing to balance problems (ultimately increasing your risk of falls and fractures)
As a woman, you will encounter at least one of these issues at some point in time. Thus, strengthening and maintaining the muscles of the inner core is vitally important to your body - and to your life - as a whole.

Unfortunately, core weakness is an epidemic in our culture. Lots of sitting and collapsed postures, worsened by fitness choices that flex the body and ignore the internal corset, create the perfect environment for a weak, inactive internal core. Without strength or stability, the body compensates in harmful ways--resulting in physical and internal health issues. Our work together will be particularly focused on "connecting to" and strengthening your inner core muscles.

menopause and pelvic health

Menopause can create its own changes in the vagina, pelvic floor muscles, and sex drive. Declining estrogen levels can cause thinning of the vaginal and urethral tissues, which can contribute to pain with intercourse. Vaginal tissue thinning, when combined with age-related decline in immune function, leads to an increased potential for skin breakdown and urinary tract infections. Many women in peri-menopause will note problems with vaginal dryness, and some will note changes in libido--usually there's a lot less of it! Common sexual complaints in women ages 40-69 include loss of desire, decreased frequency of sexual activity, painful intercourse and diminished sexual response.

Be particularly aware of your PFMs if you are...
  • pregnant, or have just had a baby, or have ever had a baby
  • pre- or post-menopause
  • overweight (or have a body mass index that is 25+)
  • lifting heavy weights; (perhaps as part of your job, in your role as a mother lifting children and supermarket shopping, or pressing gym weights, for example)
  • often straining in the toilet because of constipation
  • coughing or sneezing a lot (e.g. with asthma, smoker's cough, hay fever)
  • an elite athlete (e.g. a runner, gymnast or trampolinist)
  • diagnosed with a prolapse
Or if you're a woman who has...
  • had a hysterectomy or other gynecological surgery
  • a history of back pain
  • suffered trauma or injury to the pelvic area (e.g. a fall, radiotherapy)
If you are in one of these at risk groups or if you have symptoms of pelvic floor problems, it is important your exercise program is pelvic floor safe. Protecting  your pelvic floor now will save you problems in the future.
